Coach Pitman Inducted into the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame

CHATTANOOGA, TN- Baylor Swim Club / Baylor School assistant coach Laura Pitman was inducted into the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame on Monday, February 28th for her athletic achievements in swimming. Congratulations to Coach Pitman on this great honor.

Laura Sawyer Pitman qualified for the YMCA nationals at age 12. She set 42 team records for Cleveland, and qualified for junior nationals and named to the 1977 AAU all-star team. She was listed on four national AAU top time lists in 1979. Pitman was All-American at Mercersburg Academy and set several records there. She was a top 16 NCAA finisher in both backstroke and relay events for the University of Tennessee. held Lady Vols 100 backstroke record at one time and has been an assistant coach for nationally top-ranked Baylor School teams.

  • Started swimming at age 5 at the Cleveland YMCA
  • Held 42 team records for the Aqua Tigers in the 11-12, 13-14 and senior age groups
  • Qualified for YMCA Nationals at 12 years old ( the minimum age allowed)
  • Placed 9th in the 100 back and 16th in the 200 IM at the Y nationals-1977
  • Southeastern Record Holder – 11-12 50 meter backstroke
    1978 Named to the AAU All Star team
  • Qualified for US nationals at age 14
  • Placed top 16 at US Nationals
  • High Point winner at the CASL City Championship  ages 8, 10,11 and 12
  • Set numerous CASL records
  • Was the first and only person to set records in every 11-12 age group event in the prelims session and break them all again during the finals session

  • Member of 2 National High School Record setting relay teams
  • Eastern Prep School Champion
  • Mercersburg Academy school record holder 100 back and 200 IM
    Ten time Individual High School All American
  • Ranked third nationally in the 100 back among high school swimmers – 1981 and 1982
  • 1980 Olympic trial qualifier
  • Nationally ranked in 4 events – 1979
  • Team captain at Mercersburg Academy both Junior and Senior years
  • 2 time All American at the university of Tennessee
  • Top 8 and top 16 finisher at SEC Championships 100 and 200 back
  • Top 16 finisher at NCAA’s 100 back and medley relay
