CHATTANOOGA, TN- This past Saturday (Nov. 16) the Baylor School Varsity swim team hosted and competed in the 2019 SpringHill Suites Elite High School Invitational. The 25 short course meter competition featured the McDonogh School from Owings Mills, MD and Cardinal Gibbons High School located in Raleigh, NC. Baylor School junior, Ellie Waldrep took down two 25-meter High School National Records. She claimed national records in both the 200-meter IM (2:16.88) and the 100-meter backstroke (59.87). The previous record in the 100-meter backstroke was held by Baylor School alumni Arden Pitman Meek which was set back in 2008.
Waldrep led the Baylor School girls to victories over both the McDonogh School (89-81) and Cardinal Gibbons High School (122-48). Senior Jewel Gordon was a two-event winner for the Aqua Raiders, taking first in the 50-meter freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, junior Logan Watson-Brown won the 100 freestyle, and freshman Lillie Boggs was first in the 400 freestyle. Baylor also won two relays, the 200 medley (Waldrep, Gordon, senior Avery Wilson, Watson-Brown) and the 200 freestyle (Waldrep, junior Lydia Bohannon, Wilson, Gordon).
The Baylor School Varsity boys were victorious over Cardinal Gibbons (113-57) and then fell to the McDonogh School (108.5-61.5). Senior, Alex Borisov was the only event winner for the Baylor boys, taking first in the 100 breaststroke. He was also second in the 200 individual medley. Junior Aidan Sims led a list of second-place finishes for Baylor, taking the number two spot in the 100 and 200 freestyle events. Other second-place finishers went to senior Daniel Unhuryan (100 butterfly), junior Daniel Snyder (400 freestyle), the 200 freestyle relay (senior Will Tippett, Borisov, Unhuryan, Sims), and the 400 freestyle relay (Sims, senior Noah Althoff, sophomore Charlie Han, Snyder).
