ATLANTA, GA- This past weekend, May 17-19 six Baylor Swim Club athletes competed in the 2019 Atlanta Classic Swim Meet. The meet features some of the top swimmers from all across the country and is being swum at the world-class Georgia Tech McAuley Aquatic Center, the home pool of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. The main highlights from the meet came from Cecilia Porter and Ellie Waldrep. Porter got things off to a hot start for Baylor on Friday, qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Team Trials in the 100-meter breaststroke swimming a time of 1:10.34 in the morning prelims session. She ended up taking 6th overall in the event in evening finals. Baylor School sophomore Ellie Waldrep dropped at 1:02.14 to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Team Trials in the 100-meter backstroke to finish sixth overall in a very competitive championship finals heat. She also finished eighth in the 200-meter backstroke in a new team record time of 2:16.64. The Olympic Team Trials- Swimming will be held June 21-28, 2020 at CHI Health Center in Omaha, NE.
Baylor alumni and current University of Florida Gator Trey Freeman was also competing in the high level meet this weekend. He claimed first overall in the 400-meter freestyle in a time of 3:52.35. He also finished third on Friday evening in the 200-meter freestyle. Freeman’s times in both the 200 and 400-meter freestyle events were also under the 2020 Olympic Trials qualifying time standard. He participated in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in 2016.
Baylor senior Addison Smith had a very productive competition as well. Smith finished 9th in the 200 butterfly, 10th in the 400 free, 13th in the 200 free, 14th in the 200 IM, and 15th in the 100 butterfly. Her time of 2:20.42 in the 200-meter IM was also a new team record in the event.
Jack Kirby and Alex Borisov had some very solid swims. Kirby finished ninth in the 100-meter backstroke swimming a time of 57.27, while Borisov claimed ninth in the 200-meter breaststroke in a time of 2:23.22.
Overall at the Atlanta Classic Swim Meet Baylor Swim Club athletes swam to four Olympic Trials qualifying times, one National cut, four team records, and all six athletes competed in an A-Final over the course of the three-day competition.
