Senior Girls Dominate at Futures Championships in Cary, NC

CARY, NC- This past week Baylor Swim Club athletes Jewel Gordon, Cecilia Porter, Addison Smith and Ellie Waldrep competed in the 2018 USA Swimming Futures Championships.  The competition was held August 2-5 at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, NC.  This meet featured over 600 of the best up and coming swimmers from the southern part of the country.  The four athletes that competed had some outstanding performances throughout the weekend.  They capped off a great meet on Sunday with the gold medal in the 400 Medley Relay. The quartet of Ellie Waldrep, Cecilia Porter, Addison Smith, and Jewel Gordon finished with a winning time of 4:18.10.  With just four athletes competing in the meet the Baylor Swim Club finished sixth in the women’s overall team scores.

Addison Smith continued to have a fantastic summer, and she started the meet off on Friday with a victory in the 800 meter freestyle, posting a speedy time of 8:54.55.  She continued on a tear on Friday, finishing first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:02.76, and took second in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.01.  Smith also had seventh place finishes in 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle events.  Her 200 IM on Sunday in finals was also a new team record finishing with in a time of 2:21.47.  The previous record was held by Arden Pitman which was set back in 2008.

Ellie Waldrep made her presence known with a Futures Championship title in the 100 meter backstroke swimming a time of 1:03.15.  Teammate Cecilia Porter also had some impressive swims over the weekend.  Porter had a big break through swim in the 100 meter breaststroke in a time of 1:11.47 to claim silver in the event. Her time in the 100 BR is also a new team record which was held by Ashley Vance set back in 2009.  She also swam to a seventh place finish in the 200 meter breaststroke on Saturday evening.

Futures Championships


The Baylor Swim Club also had athletes competing at both Speedo Junior National Championships (July 31- Aug. 4) in Irvine, CA and at the Southern Zone Senior Championships (July 31- Aug. 4) in Huntsville, AL.  Jack Kirby swam to a sixth place finish at Speedo Junior National Championships in the 100 meter backstroke in a time of 56.75.  Kirby also took 36th in the 100 meter freestyle.  Meanwhile in Huntsville, AL at the Southern Zone Senior Championships, Zach Kangieser took 19th in the 200 fly, and finished 30th in the 400 meter freestyle.
