Team Records Fall at 2021 Southeastern Swimming Long Course Championships

NASHVILLE, TN– On the weekend of July 16-18, 2021, over forty Baylor Swim Club athletes competed at the Southeastern Swimming Long Course Championships. Over 800 athletes from the states of Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida competed at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville, TN and at the Williamson County Indoor Sports Complex in Brentwood, TN. Leading the way for the Aqua Raiders were some outstanding performances from thirteen-year-old Avery May and eleven-year-old Anara Summers.  May took the 13-14 girls Southeastern title in the 400-meter freestyle and placed second in the 1500 meter-freestyle.  With her time of 18:12.56 in the 13-14 1500-meter freestyle, she eclipsed the team record 0f 18:21.98 set back in 2007 by Savannah NapierAnara Summers finished second in 11-12 girls 400-meter free, and took third in the 200 free.  Summers broke team records in both the 11-12 girls 200 and 400-meter freestyle events.  The previous records in the 200-meter free and 400-meter free were set back in 2003 by Erin Simpson.   Another team record was set by twelve-year-old Shepherd Sewell in the 11-12 400-meter freestyle.  His time of 4:42.72 broke the previous team record of 4:46.88 set by Luke Waldrep back in 2019.  Sewell also finished second in both the 200 and 400 freestyle events.

In the open senior events, Lillie Boggs claimed the Southeastern Championship in the 200-meter breaststroke clocking a time of 2:39.52.  Ellie Waldrep, a 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials participant, finished up her Baylor career by taking second in the 100-meter backstroke and then taking third in both the 200 and 50-meter backstroke events.  On the boy’s side, Drew Hitchcock took second in the 200 fly, 200 IM, and 400 IM events.  Teammate Charlie Han swam to a second-place finish in the 200-meter breaststroke and finished third in the 100-meter breaststroke.  Sam Flack and Josean Massucco also had solid meets.  Flack took third in the 200-meter butterfly, 400 IM, and 1500-meter freestyle, while Massucco swam to a second-place finish in the 1500-meter freestyle.
