HUNTSVILLE, AL- This past weekend (February 19-21, 2021) the Baylor Swim Club sent twenty-two athletes to compete in the 2021 Southeastern Swimming Short Course Championships at the Huntsville Aquatic Center in Huntsville, AL. With a total team effort, the Baylor Swim Club came away with the women’s team title and finished second overall in the combined team scores. The Baylor men placed 3rd in the overall team scores. The meet featured over 300 athletes from the Southeastern Swimming LSC (Tennessee, Alabama, & the panhandle of Florida).
Leading the way for the Baylor Swim Club were some big-time performances from Ellie Waldrep and Lillie Boggs. Waldrep swam to Southeastern titles in the 50-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke, 50-yard backstroke, 100-yard butterfly, and 200-yard backstroke events. She blasted a personal best time of 51.75 in the 100-yard backstroke to break her own Baylor School record of 52.42.
Fifteen-year-old Lille Boggs was equally impressive in the meet. Boggs claimed first-place finishes in both the 500 and 1650-yard freestyle events. Her time of 16:49.90 in the mile broke the Baylor Swim Club team record in the event. The previous record was held by Baylor alumni and 2020 Olympic Trials Qualifier and Addison Smith. Smith is currently a sophomore swimming at the University of North Carolina.
The Baylor men were led by both freshman Drew Hitchcock and sophomore Josean Massucco. Hitchcock finished 2nd in the 200-yard butterfly and 3rd in the 400-yard IM, while Massucco claimed 3rd in the 1650-yard freestyle event. Charlie Han had a breakthrough meet taking the Southeastern title in the 200-yard breaststroke swimming a finals time of 2:03.45.
