OMAHA, NE- This past week, June 13-20, Baylor Swim Club / Baylor School athlete Ellie Waldrep competed at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team Trials- Swimming held at the CHI Health Cente in Omaha, Nebraska. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Olympic Trials were divided into two competitions, with Wave I on June 4-7, 2021, and Wave II on June 13-20, 2021. Wave II served as the sole qualifier for pool swimmers on the U.S. Olympic Team for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
Ellie Waldrep certainly held her own against some very tough competition in the 100-meter backstroke. She finished 17th overall in the event clocking a time of 1:01.06 and just missing out on swimming in the semi-final heat in the event. She also placed 33rd overall in the 200-meter backstroke posting a time of 2:14.58. In the fall of 2021, Ellie Waldrep will attend and swim at Auburn University.
Baylor alum Trey Freeman and current University of Florida athlete Trey Freeman also competed in WAVE II of the Olympic Team Trials. Freeman made it back to finals in both the 400-meter and 800-meter freestyle events. He finished 6th in the 400-meter freestyle swimming a time of 3:49.07. Freeman also placed 6th overall in the 800-meter freestyle posting a time of 7:59.09.
Addison Smith competed in WAVE I of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. She is also a Baylor alum and is a rising junior swimming at the University of North Carolina. Smith finished 7th overall in the 200-meter freestyle in the WAVE I meet racing to a time of 2:03.15.
