CHATTANOOGA, TN- The Baylor School Boys Varsity Swimming & Diving team was named by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) as 2021-2022 National Independent School Dual Meet Champions. The NISCA awards program is based on submitted team results of high school athletes (grades 9-12) that are translated into power points. For the sixth time, the Baylor School Varsity boys took the title in the Independent School Class 11 scoring a total of 5,810 points. The Brunswick School (Greenwich, CT) finished second with 5,560 points, and Westminster Schools (Atlanta, GA) was third.

Team Records Fall at 2021 Southeastern Swimming Long Course Championships
NASHVILLE, TN– On the weekend of July 16-18, 2021, over forty Baylor Swim Club athletes competed at the Southeastern Swimming Long Course Championships. Over 800 athletes from the states of Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida competed at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville, TN and at the Williamson County Indoor Sports Complex in Brentwood, TN. Leading the way for the Aqua Raiders were some outstanding performances from thirteen-year-old Avery May and eleven-year-old Anara Summers. May took the 13-14 girls Southeastern title in the 400-meter freestyle and placed second in the 1500 meter-freestyle. With her time of 18:12.56 in the 13-14 1500-meter freestyle, she eclipsed the team record 0f 18:21.98 set back in 2007 by Savannah Napier. Anara Summers finished second in 11-12 girls 400-meter free, and took third in the 200 free. Summers broke team records in both the 11-12 girls 200 and 400-meter freestyle events. The previous records in the 200-meter free and 400-meter free were set back in 2003 by Erin Simpson. Another team record was set by twelve-year-old Shepherd Sewell in the 11-12 400-meter freestyle. His time of 4:42.72 broke the previous team record of 4:46.88 set by Luke Waldrep back in 2019. Sewell also finished second in both the 200 and 400 freestyle events.

Baylor School Swimming Receives NISCA Silver Medal Scholar Team Awards
CHATTANOOGA, TN- On June 18, 2021, the Baylor School Swimming teams were recognized by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) as 2020-2021 Scholar Teams.
The Baylor School boys had a 3.628 team GPA to earn NISCA Silver Level Academic status. The boy’s team also got it done in the pool as they claimed the 2021 TISCA State Swimming & Diving Championship.
The Baylor School girls finished with a 3.618 team GPA earning NISCA Silver Level Academic Status. The girls were equally impressive in the pool taking the 2021 TISCA State Swimming & Diving Championship.

Josean Massucco Leads Team Puerto Rico at CCCAN Meet
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO– This past week, June 23-27, 2021 Baylor School / Baylor Swim Club athlete Josean Massucco competed in the 2021 Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation (CCCAN) Meet representing his home country of Puerto Rico. The meet featured many of the best swimmers from across Central America and the Caribbean and was held at the San Juan Natatorium in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Overall Massucco had an outstanding competition and finished the meet with eight gold and two silver medals. Puerto Rico finished in first place in the combined team scores racking up a total of 1,697 points. Massucco took first place in the 15-17 age group in the 800-meter freestyle, 400-meter IM, 200-meter butterfly, and 400-meter freestyle. He capped off the meet with a first-place finish and strong come back in the 100-meter butterfly posting a time of 57.50. He was also a member of three gold medal-winning relays for Team Puerto Rico.
Baylor School / Baylor Swim Club teammate Santiago Domenech also competed in the CCCAN swimming competition as a member of Team Puerto Rico. Domenech finished 5th in the 200-meter backstroke and 8th in the 100-meter backstroke.
Sam Flack Invited to Participate in USA Swimming’s 2021 Zone Select Performance Workshop
CHATTANOOGA, TN– Baylor Swim Club / Baylor School athlete Sam Flack was selected to participate in USA Swimming’s 2021 Zone Select Performance Workshop. These workshops will consist of the top swimmers in each zone based on the 2019 and 2020 Long Course Meters (LCM) seasons combined. It was held virtually on Monday, June 28th (Eastern & Southern Zones).
The goal of this workshop is motivational and is designed to develop the athlete’s leadership skills. Athletes will have the opportunity to learn from two organizations: Growing Leaders and More Brave. Both organizations have extensive experience working with student-athletes as well as providing leadership training.
Team Records Fall for Baylor at 2021 Tennessee Aquatics June Invitational
KNOXVILLE, TN– On June 18-20, 2021, the Baylor Swim Club traveled to Knoxville, TN to compete in the 2021 Tennessee Aquatics June Invitational held at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatics Center located on the campus on the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Baylor Swim Club had over 40 athletes participate in the two-and-a-half-day meet. Over 200 swimmers from the eastern part of Tennessee competed in the swim meet. Two Baylor Swim Club team records were broken at the competition. Eleven-year-old Anara Summers broke the team record in the 11-12 girls 200-meter IM posting a time of 2:36.59. The previous record was held by Baylor and University of Florida Gator standout Stephanie Napier which was set back in 2000. Luke Waldrep broke the 13-14 boys team record in the 100-meter backstroke swimming a time of 1:04.59. The previous record was set back in 1999 by Baylor School All-American Ryan Bishop.

Waldrep Completes Solid U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Finishes 17th in the 100-meter Backstroke
OMAHA, NE- This past week, June 13-20, Baylor Swim Club / Baylor School athlete Ellie Waldrep competed at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team Trials- Swimming held at the CHI Health Cente in Omaha, Nebraska. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Olympic Trials were divided into two competitions, with Wave I on June 4-7, 2021, and Wave II on June 13-20, 2021. Wave II served as the sole qualifier for pool swimmers on the U.S. Olympic Team for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
Waldrep Featured in Local Media Ahead of Olympic Team Trials
CHATTANOOGA, TN- This week Baylor Swim Club / Baylor School athlete Ellie Waldrep was featured in the Chattanooga area local media ahead of her competition at the 2021 Olympic Team Trials- Swimming (June 13-20) in Omaha, NE next week. She appeared in an article in the Chattanooga Times Free Press which charts her journey to the 2021 Olympic Team Trials. Waldrep was also featured on WRCB which was in the 4 PM, 6 PM, and 11 PM newscasts on Thursday, June 10th. See the links below

CASL Nights at the Races
It is once again time for another great season of CASL summer league swimming, and Nights at the Races. Below is just some information the Baylor Swimming Staff would like to pass on to you.
Every Baylor Swim Club member who participates, officiates, coaches or attends a Monday or Thursday night meet has a great opportunity to spread the word about the benefits of Baylor Swim Club and year-round swimming. Our coaches will make the rounds at many meets, but we can’t be everywhere. These Monday and Thursday night meets are a great way for all members to get involved in building our program.
